Psychology Behind Pain: Why Do You Feel Pain More Than Others?

WHAT IS PAIN?

Pain is an unpleasant sensation that indicates that somewhat is not right. It can be defined as persistent, pulsing, stinging, burning, irritating, or in a variety of various ways. It can also be a little annoyance, such as a slight head pain or it may also be severe sometimes.

EFFECT OF PAIN 

Other clinical signs such as nausea, disorientation, fatigue, or sleepiness might occur as a result of pain. Anger, anxiety, sorrow, mood disturbances, and impatience are some of the emotional side effects. Remember, pain exhibits the potential to alter lifestyle and freedom. It may also influence your work or interpersonal relationships.

TYPES OF PAIN 

Acute pain and chronic pain are two types of pain. Acute pain is generally intense and brief, and it indicates the injury or wound someone gets. Chronic pain varies from mild, moderate to severe and typically lasts for a long time. It is frequently caused by an underlying illness that requires clinical management, i.e. treatment or medications.

PAIN PERCEPTION: THE BRAIN PATHWAYS INVOLVED IN PAIN

According to the research studies, the pain has two separate brain circuits.  In the first case, a pain stimulus might originate from anywhere on the body and trigger the brain's anterior cingulate cortex. It is involved in pain perception. A pain stimulus might originate from anywhere on the body and trigger the brain's anterior cingulate cortex. It is involved in pain perception via the medial prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens that links pain perception with impulses and emotions.  Furthermore, other elements play a role in pain perception, e.g.
  • character, 
  • cognition, 
  • ideologies, 
  • societal factors, 
  • learning, and 
  • emotional response.
As these factors vary from person to person, the perception and degree of pain also vary in different people. Different people have different characters, different cognition and sensation, different learning and responding behaviour, different mental and emotional aspects, as well as they, belong to different societal conditions. The adaptive experiences, after a child is born, can shape the degree of pain perception. Family, friends and interpersonal relationships also play a vital role in this regard.

HOW DOES PAIN DEPEND ON THE CHARACTERS OR PERSONALITIES OF PEOPLE?


Pain sensitivity depends on the individuals – if the person loves to interact or attach with another person or the person belongs in the avoiding category. The attached individuals desire deep relationships, yet they often put their own needs aside for others' happiness. They experience more agony when they are around someone who does not respect their situation. People who have an aversive or avoiding type of approach prefer freedom and self-dependency over companionship or bonding with others. Even if they feel lonely, they experience less suffering.


CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK TOWARDS PAIN PSYCHOLOGY 


If you suffer more pain than others its probably because of your personality. Moreover, it depends on your brain who process your knowledge, your learning, your memory, your emotion along with your culture and environment in which you are born and brought up. As each and every mentioned elements are different in case of different individuals, they sense pain in varied degrees. 

       Now you know your pain psychology. But remember, pain is not only suffering, it makes you strong and tolerant for the future pain sensations you receive. The more you are hurt, the more you are strong to fight every future obstacles. Your fight or flight mode is on. You are much more conscious before investing in each and every people and life stages you interact with. Every time you struggle with new pain stimuli, you become a little bit different and updated version of yourself. Cheers to your life.
